Sailing ahead down the tar-sealed road,
a shadow, wide-winged and languid.

The seagull and sun behind me
pull like a kite on invisible string.

This way! the grey shape calls—
follow the line you are casting.

See how you know where you’re going,
how you’re already half of you there.

Only in quiet will you hear it,
the undercurrent, the base note
