Do you want to express yourself creatively but doubt yourself, or feel frustrated at your efforts? Do you have creative callings but feel afraid to try?

Lots of get frustrated when we draw, fear our writing isn't good enough, or long to try our hand at something new only to think “what's the point?”. We look at other people making things and compare ourselves. No matter how we try, feelings of not good enough persist. So we keep putting off opportunities for later, hoping we will feel differently in the future. Or, we give up completely, deciding that the life we'd love to live is, for some reason, not for us.

Do you relate to any of that? If so, you are not alone. That was my experience.

These types of thoughts and feelings are actually very common, and the root is often in our early experiences with creativity. How people around us responded at that time, and the sense we made of it as a child or teenager, informed the beliefs we now have as an adult.

Several of the empathetic phrases almost made me punch the air and say “Yes! Exactly!”
Hearing the words spoken made them feel a lot more real than reading them.

DO YOU RELATE TO ANY OF THESE?

  • You often have creative ideas but can’t get started.

  • You want to take up new creative activities but hesitate.

  • You look at what other people are creating and feel a longing to do something similar.

  • You have judgemental thoughts about the things you make.

  • You worry that others might judge what you make.

  • You sometimes feel emotional and vulnerable around your creativity.

  • You think your feelings and thoughts about this seem silly, so you don’t seek support.

  • Part of you thinks creativity and art is trivial or frivolous, and that stops you from enjoying or pursuing it.

I wrote that list because I experienced all of those things myself. If you identify with any of them, then I invite you to Reclaim Your Creativity with me.

I let the words flow and found myself inviting my younger self to step out from hiding and share our light with the rest of the world.

I found this a very powerful exercise and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wishes to express themselves creatively, to dig down to find some of the reasons for this being more difficult than it needs to be.
