SUNDAY 7 JUNE, 9AM (NZST)

ON ZOOM, NZD$66

The poet Mary Oliver is beloved to so many. Why is that? What is it about her poems that appeal to, soothe and inspire so many people? There is so much to learn from Mary Oliver, and a close reading of her poetry offers many insights into the power of her writing.

In this workshop we will:

  • look at how she created magic in her poems,

  • examine some of the hallmarks of her work,

  • learn from the techniques she used, and

  • play with incorporating them in our own writing.

I'll also give you a personally-curated list of my favourite Mary Oliver resources (things to read, watch and listen to). A basket full of extra goodness to dive into once the workshop is done!

Mary Oliver herself urged new writers to imitate, to look closely at the work of poets they admired to see how their poems worked.

“Imitation is a very good way of investigating the real thing,” she said. “You would learn very little in this world if you were not allowed to imitate.”

So with Mary Oliver looking approvingly over our shoulder, we’ll look more closely at her poetry and see what we can divine for our own.

Before we can be poets, we must practice; imitation is a very good way of investigating the real thing.
