Happy Mother’s Day!

Hello to you, In New Zealand it is Mother’s Day weekend. I wonder if it is where you are too? Here’s my favourite way to celebrate. (It has replaced my previous favourite way to celebrate, which required my family to guess my every desire and me to pray they got it right.) Instead, it now looks like this: I will shower myself with acknowledgement and thanks for what I do for my children. I will listen lovingly to any feelings I have about the times I wish I’d done things differently (there’s lots of times). I will look at my children and remember the time I first laid eyes on them. I will thank them (out loud or silently, depending on the child and their tolerance for overt displays of motherly love) for letting me love them. I will go about my day, tending to whatever comes up, noticing how awesome I am at tending to everything that comes up. I will remember that my relationship with my children is for life and if they aren’t great at outwardly appreciating me right now, they are highly likely to be when they’re adults. I can wait for that. I will make myself a cup of tea and savour, savour, savour it, leaning against my kitchen bench, looking out at the garden. Anything that anyone else says or does for me on Mother’s Day will be a sweet, genuine gesture of love. But I won’t need it to feel acknowledged, seen and loved. I already did that for myself.
